Cotton mills were one of the first places to utilize child labor during the Industrial Revolution. The first jobs for children were in water powered cotton mills near the river. With the invention of the cotton spinning jenny and the steam engine, cotton could be spun much faster and cotton mills could be moved into the cities.
Child labor was a common practice throughout much of the Industrial Revolution. Estimates show that over 50% of the workers in some British factories in the early 1800s were under the age of 14. The significance of child labor during the Industrial Revolution was attached to both the changes in the nature of child labor and the extent to which children were employed in the factories.
