I bought a Grizzly back in the fall but only last week got to use it. I also have parts for a KMG clone that I haven't even started building. I had no idea how much of a difference a 2x72 grinder would make. I am considering buying a good machine now as I am well aware of the Grizzly's limitations.

Typically, the KMG Grinders ship in three separate boxes. The Chassis is all steel. unpainted and unplated, with precisely bolted joints and minimum welding. The KMG was intentionally designed so that the motor was not an integral part of the machine which allows for unlimited choices in how the grinder is powered.

My first grinder was a KMG clone complete with pulleys and shaft. I felt it was all that was needed..... Until I built my next grinder - still pretty much a KMG clone, except I put a direct drive mounting plate... I had to eat crow on the benefits of direct drive and variable speed. Just no other way to go as far as I'm concerned.

If I had $500 to spend on a grinder, I'd definitely build a KMG clone again though. If you don't kind taking some time scrounging for expensive bits like a 3ph motor and maybe a VFD, and if you have some fabrication skills, you'll end up with a MUCH better grinder. It's a KMG clone kit, but doesn't come close to the smoothness of my KMG. Makes a big difference when you start getting close to the finish line. Once you add the expense of a quality 8" to 10" contact wheel, arm, adjustable square rest, small radius wheels and yoke, you are going to be getting closer to the price of a higher grade grinder.
