That aside, one other thing this mill needs is a good vise. The table's not huge, so a typical 5" Kurt-style clone tends to be a bit oversized. AND, perhaps moreso than a vertical mill, it's handy to be able to easily rotate the vise at least 90 degrees, to be able to present the part to the cutter in a preferable way.

I bought this off ebay and it was damaged in shipping. I restored it and found another motor. This is a manual mill, with lever activation, great for doing production work. I use the mill mostly for slotting brass/bronze handsaw backs, and slotting the split nuts I make. I also have the vertical head attachment.

There are specific end mill holders with the B&S 9 taper and threaded tail for draw bar as the arbors for horizontal milling cutters/wheels use. The B&S taper is fairly locking taper but needs drawbar for milling wheels. The curious thing is the slotted arbor which drives the vertical head is 1 1/8" diameter yet has no thread for drawbar.

The Nichols vertical head has essentially the same spindle as the horizontal, an NMTB-40, with four spots for "drive screws", or Allen bolts which act as driving lugs for the toolholder. To mount it, the machine has to have a "T-slot ring", which mine just happened to have. Four bolts with nuts, and the thing can rotate to basically any position.

Slotting heads are pretty cool, but I cannot use mine. I have a DoAll Bridgeport copy, and my genuine Bridgeport slotting head does not fit on it. It is supposed to go on the eyelet on the backside, opposite the regular head. For some reason, the vertical measurement on my mill is slightly too big.
