Also known as the Rock Run Mansion, this majestic 14-room stone structure was built in 1804 by John Carter, a partner of John Stump in the Rock Run Mill. When Carter died a year later, the house passed to the Stumps' daughter, Ann, and her husband, Dr. John Archer, Jr.
John Jefferys, an ex-Quaker, had settled in Bath in about 1740 and was appointed Town Clerk in 1760, a post he held until 1800. In addition to being Clerk he was financial advisor to the younger John Wood, the architect responsible for finishing the celebrated Royal Crescent which had been begun by his father, and where Jefferys resided at 9.
