5. Jan 30, 2010. #1. I have an opportunity to buy an old Benchmaster vertical mill with a 6x18 table. It is very nice condition, the thing I do not care about it is the table side to side has a lever with a rack and pinion, not a screw and hand wheel, is this an acceptable way of milling. I could get it for a few hundred dollars.

This machine is both a vertical and horizontal mill. The vertical head was adapted from a Benchmaster Vertical Mill. The arm was turned to fit the castings. Still researching origins of the machine. A similar machine was featured in the April and May, 1943 issues of Popular Science. Photo 1:
I have a Benchmaster myself. It has a heavy table, and I scraped mine into good alignment, so it is pretty chatter-free, as mills that size go. But one of the usual advantages of a vertical mill these days IS the quill, and what having that does for you. I seriously question the price vs what you get as far as an actual machine.

I have a vertical benchmaster mill from which I cannot extract the end mill that came with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have applied penetrating oil liberally for weeks and tapped the head of the bolt which, I think, draws in the collet, but nothing changes.

The machine I just bought, has the shorter table, what looks to be a factory steel bench, both the vertical, and horizontal milling set ups and what looks to be a table feed. I don't know if the feed works in two directions or just one, and if it is has different FPM settings. also don't know spindle RPM for the different pulley positions.

The Benchmaster has a vertical mill version, which may likely be what the OP wants (most folks in that size category do not want a horizontal mill). The Burke does not, I think, have that option, so as you say, it would need a separate vertical head. The size restraints and small work may suggest the Benchmaster.
I use a Benchmaster at work just about every day. It is great for milling wood, brass, and aluminum. It's not that great for running cutters above 1/4", and not that great for milling steel. $100 is a great deal for one, and that one looks like it is in pretty nice shape. I have seen them go for over $1000 on eBay, when two people really want one.

The Benchmaster is a neat little machine and quite capable. It came in several variations, horizontal and with a vertical head. The MV-1 designates a vertical mill, the vertical head might have gone missing, and just the horizontal capability remains.
